Azul was designed by the world famous, award winning game author Michael Riesling. Azul captures the beautiful aesthetics of Moorish art in a contemporary board game. Players compete as artisans decorating the walls of the royal Palace of Dvora. By carefully drafting the correct Quantity and style of tiles, the most clever of artisans plan ahead to maximize the beauty of their work (not to mention their scores!) while ensuring they wasted no supplies in the process. Introduced by the moors, "azulejos" (originally white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully embraced by the Portuguese, when their King Manuel I, on a visit to the Alhambra Palace in Southern Spain, was mesmerized by the stunning beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The King, awestruck by the interior beauty of the Alhambra, immediately ordered that his own Palace in Portugal be decorated with similar wall tiles. As a tile laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the royal Palace of Dvora.

  • TILE PLACEMENT GAME: Azul is a tile placement game in which players become artisans tasked with creating the most beautiful tiled mosaics. Compete for the highest score by claiming tiles and arranging them on your board to score points
  • STRATEGY BOARD GAME: Draft tiles from a central market and place them into rows on their boards. Earn extra points by collecting sets of the same color tile and creating particular patterns. Be careful - there are penalties for taking tiles that you can't use

      I had played this game some before purchasing it and liked it so much I had to buy it for my own collection. Everyone in my family whose played it agrees, you always want to play it again! The other versions are awesome too, but I just feel like this one is so classic.

      We really enjoyed this game. We (hubby and I) just got it and we didn't know anything about how to play it or anything. It took us a few start overs when we would figure out how a certain rule applied, but once we understood all the rules and got into playing, we really enjoyed it. It's a strategy game. My family has one who prefers card games, one who loves trivia games, one who loves word games, and one who loves opinion games like Apples to Apples. We like this game because it doesn't fall into any of those categories, and any one of us can enjoy it. Finally a game we can all play together and all enjoy equally! Hubby and I have only played it by ourselves so far, and it worked really well as a two-player game, and we are looking forward to playing it as a two-player game lots in the future. But we can already tell it will be even more fun/challenging with more players so we are looking forward to playing it with the rest of the family. I can't wait to play this more, and I wish more games were more like this one (in the sense that it is the type of game that anyone can enjoy)!

      Quick to learn and doesn't take too long to play. Able to teach multiple people how to play and they all had fun. Also, we have several people who like quick playing games. This game moves fast enough that it kept everyone's attention. Very beautiful as well and sturdy construction. Not a drawback per se but only 4 people can play at a time.

      Instructions are simple,but game is fun and challenging. Played 2 player and 4 player. The 2 player was not as fun as four. Four player uses more tiles per round to chose from, this may be why.
